SUBJECT:
Service Action to Install ASC Switch and Indicator Bulb
MODEL;
M roadster/ M coupe
Situation:
A number of M roadster and M coupe vehicles may have been produced without either the ASC switch, the ASC warning indicator bulb, or, both.
BMW is conducting a Service Action to inspect the affected vehicles, and install parts as necessary.
NOTE:
Without the ASC switch fitted, the vehicle will automatically default to the "ASC Active" state, each time the ignition is switched on.
Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action affects M roadster / M coupe produced between July 1, 1998, and September 17, 1998.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Correction:
Inspect affected vehicles, and install ASC switch and/or ASC warning indicator bulb as necessary.
Procedure:
1) Check affected vehicle.
If ASC switch is fitted in center console, proceed to step 2 below.
If ASC switch is not fitted, proceed as follows:
Remove the trim screw caps (1) and trim screws (2) from center console.
Carefully pull the panel outward, to give access to the inside of the center console
Locate the blue 4-pin connector (Wire colors red/white/yellow, brown, gray/red, green/blue/yellow)
Note:
This connector will be near the SRS module, and may be tucked under carpet the right side of the SRS module.
Remove the switch blank from the center console and pull the blue connector through the hole.
Plug the connector into the ASC switch, and install the switch into the center console.
Reinstall the trim screws and caps. Proceed to step (2) below.
2) Switch on the ignition
Actuate the ASC switch to confirm the ASC warning indicator (1), illuminates in the Instrument Cluster.
If the bulb illuminates, no further action is required.
If bulb does not illuminate, remove the Instrument Cluster and install the warning indicator bulb for ASC.
Switch on the ignition, and actuate the ASC switch to confirm the installed bulb illuminates.

Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 230. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-095) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 230 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
