SUBJECT:
Universal Garage Door Opener (UGDO) Backlighting

MODEL:
E46 3 Series Vehicles produced up to June 1999

Situation:
The standard installation of the UGDO does not provide for backlighting of the numeral buttons on the UGDO transmitter. If requested by the customer, backlighting can be provided by modifying the vehicle harness.

Procedure:

1. Prepare a jumper wire by cutting a 7 "(190 mm) length of # 22 AWG insulated copper stranded hook-up wire.

2. Strip off 1/8" (3 mm) of insulation on one end only of the above prepared wire

3. Double crimp (wire crimp and insulation crimp) a socket (female) terminal
P/N 61 13 1 383 776 onto the stripped wire end using crimp tool
P/N 81 24 9 408 126 (tool is marked Ampliversal 720781-3) found in Electric Repair Kit I).

A. E46 WITH SUNROOF

A4. Disconnect battery

A5. Locate the 3-position black terminal house with white cover connector (5) found above the sunroof control switch panel.

Note:
Later production connectors are made of a one piece white plastic construction.

If the UGDO transmitter is already installed, disconnect this 3-position connector from the UGDO transmitter.

A6. Using a very thin flat blade screwdriver, carefully separate the 3-position white cover off the black connector terminal house (5).

NOTE:
Later production connectors are made of a one piece white plastic with molded hinge construction instead of a two piece terminal house and cover; carefully pry open the hinge.

A7. Insert the prepared terminal end of wire into the # 2 position of the connector terminal house (5).

A8. Reconnect the 3-position white cover to the black connector terminal house (5). If working with a later production all white molded hinge connector, simply close the hinge to lock it in place.

A9. Place the GRAY/RED wire (2) of the sun roof control switch (1) into the quick-connect (3) inner terminal (adjacent to hinged joint).

A10. Place the previously prepared wire (4) into the quick-connect (3) outer terminal closed end).

A11. Press the quick-connect metal terminal contact into the wires making a good electrical contact and close the quick-connect cover making a secure connection.

A12. Reconnect battery.
