SUBJECT:
E46 Headlamp Condensation
MODEL:
E46 Vehicles produced up to July 1999
SITUATION :
Condensation or misting on the inside surface of the front headlamp lens.
CAUSE:
Weather conditions, such as rapidly falling temperatures or heavy rain storms will cause temporary condensation/misting on the inner surface of the lens cover.
CORRECTION:
On a customer Complaint basis only, verify the condensation/misting and, with the engine running, turn the headlamps on for 10 minutes. If the condensation/misting evaporates, then no further repair is necessary. This is a normal occurrence for this headlamp design.
If the condensation/misting is excessive and does not evaporate after the 10 minute period, the lens seal must be replaced.
PROCEDURE:
To replace the headlamp lens seal: (Note: The headlamp does not have to be removed from the vehicle to perform this procedure.)
1. Remove the turn signal lamp (3) by gently pressing the release tab (black arrow) with a suitable tool (1). The release tab is accessed through the hole (2) in the front fender lip.
2. While pressing the release tab, pull the turn signal lamp forward, as illustrated.
3. Remove the lower headlamp trim by releasing the clips (black arrows).Note: If the vehicle is equipped with the headlamp washer system, refer to repair instruction 61 67 045.
4. Remove the top weatherstrip molding(1): press the five clips and pull the molding forward.
5. Remove the lens (2) by gently pulling up on the seven locking tabs (3). When all the tabs are released, remove the lens.
6. Remove the gasket (4). A "pick" tool may be necessary to help with the gasket removal.
7. If condensation is on the inside lens, use a hair dryer or heat gun on LOW setting to dry the inside of the lens. Avoid wiping the lens Keep the dryer at least 10 inches from the lens surface.
8. Reinstall the gasket with part number 63 12 8 380 210. Slowly, remove the protective film on the replacement seal. Do not allow the adhesive to become dirty. It is helpful to start in one of the top corners and press the gasket into place in both directions.
9. Reinstall the lens. Before securing the lens to the retaining clips, carefully check the gasket and lens for proper seating.
10. Firmly press the lens to compress the gasket and secure the retainers. A "click" will be heard when a lens retainer is seated correctly.
11. Reinstall the upper weatherstrip molding, lower trim, and turn signal lamp.
