SUBJECT:
Instrument Cluster Odometer May Jump to a Lower Value
MODEL:
E46 (3 Series) Vehicles produced prior to 4/99
Situation:
After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, in a small number of cases, the displayed odometer mileage may jump to a lower value. Fault code "BE" (Light module EEPROM error) is stored in the instrument cluster
This problem may occur if a battery disconnect is performed as part of the MRS recall 99V-063 The correct vehicle mileage is redundantly stored in the LSZ.
Cause:
Software error in instrument cluster with software status lower than 15.0
Procedure:
Prior to performing a battery disconnect, check the vehicle mileage on the odometer both before and after the disconnect operation.
If the odometer jumps to a lower value (fault code "BE" in instrument cluster), replace the instrument cluster (refer to repair instruction 62 21 000). In order to transfer the correct vehicle mileage from the redundant data storage in the LSZ, code the replacement instrument cluster as follows:
-- Using DIS or MoDiC, select "Coding/Programming" Select "ZCS Coding
-- Select "E46"
-- Select "Recoding"
-- Select "Kombi"
-- Select "Replace Control Unit"
-- Select "Read data out of faulty control unit"
-- Answer "No" to the question "Is faulty control unit still fitted to vehicle?"
-- Follow on screen instructions, to transfer correct vehicle mileage from redundant data storage in LSZ.
