This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B11 09 01 dated April 2002.
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign No. 02E-A01
MODEL
E46 - 323i, 323Ci, 323iT, 323iC, 328i, 328Ci with M52TU engines
E39 - 528i, 528iT, with M52TU engines
E36 - Z3 2.3, Z3 2.8, Z3 Coupe 2.8 with M52TU engines
SITUATION
BMW has determined that certain 1999 and 2000 model year BMW automobiles with M52TU engines incorporate a crankcase ventilation hose that may fail prematurely.
In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to replace the crankcase ventilation hose on all affected vehicles.
CAUSE
The crankcase ventilation hose may be damaged / deteriorated internally due to the flow of blow-by-gasses.
The crankcase ventilation hose may develop a hole allowing un-metered air into the engine over time causing the engine to run rough and a Check Engine lamp to illuminate with miscellaneous fault codes set in the Engine Control Module (ECM/DME). The fault codes set may include fuel mixture faults and cylinder misfire faults.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall involves E46 3 series, E39 5 series and E36 Z3 vehicles with M52TU engines which were produced from 11/3/98 - 2/3/00.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Check for presence of the affected crankcase ventilation hose, see item (3) in illustration, on all affected vehicles.
If the crankcase ventilation hose is present, it must be replaced on all affected vehicles.
If the crankcase ventilation hose is not present, no further action is required.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the plastic fuel injector rail cover from the engine. See repair manual repair group 11, section 11 61 050 for cover removal tips.
2. Loosen clamp (1) at the front and the quick disconnect (2) at the rear of the crankcase ventilation hose (3). Remove the hose.
Note:
For better access to the hose clamp and quick disconnect connection on the crankcase ventilation hose, remove the 4 Torx (T25) screws that secure the plastic air distribution rail (4), carefully pull the rail up and move to the side.
3. Install the new crankcase ventilation hose and reinstall the plastic air distribution rail using new 0-rings.
Note:
During installation of the new crankcase ventilation hose assure that the quick disconnect connector is fully seated. A click noise is heard when the connector is pushed onto the fitting.
4. Reinstall the plastic fuel injector rail cover on the engine.
PARTS INFORMATION
RECALL LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
After the vehicle has been corrected, obtain a label (SD92-193) and with a ball point pen print your BMW center code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 100 labels will be sent to all BMW automotive centers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the left front strut tower (in the engine compartment) next to the Vehicle Emission Control Label.
For California centers only it is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emissions Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.
Note:
Additional labels can be ordered from Product Engineering.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Recall will be provided through campaign entry.
