SUBJECT:
Service Action to Secure Seat Harness

MODEL:
E46 Convertible

Situation:
The seat wiring harnesses of both front seats on certain 323i Convertibles were not properly secured in production, and the harness could become damaged from normal seat movement over time. BMW is conducting a Service Action to secure the harness.

Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action involves 323i Convertibles produced from 9/99 to 2/00.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Procedure:
Perform this procedure on both front seats.

Raise seat to its highest position and as far forward as it will go. Move the backrest fully forward.

The illustrations show the procedure being performed on the passenger seat.

The wires that must be fastened in place will be found hanging below the seat frame on the inboard side of each front seat (1).

Loosen, but do not remove, the Torx(r) screw (2) holding the rear of the inboard trim cover to the seat.

Slip a 7" plastic wire tie (3) down through the seat frame and around the wires.

Tuck the tie in under the loosened trim cover and pull tight. The tie should not be visible when the Torx(r) screw holding the cover is tightened, and the wires should be held firmly against the seat frame.

For purposes of clarity, this illustration shows the installed wire tie with the cover removed to show the correct routing of the tie. However, the cover cannot be removed with the seat installed in the car.

This Service Action has been assigned code number 274 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 274 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
