SUBJECT:
Installation of Voltmeter

MODEL:
M roadster, M coupe (E36/7)

Situation:
M roadsters and M coupes produced prior t6 October 5,1998 have a blanking plate in the center instrument position of the center console.

Week commencing January 18,1999, BMW is direct shipping a Voltmeter to M roadster and M coupe owners. These owners will be making appointments at BMW centers, to have the Voltmeter installed in their vehicles at no charge to the customer.

Procedure:

1. Remove the trim caps (1) and trim screws (2) on the front right side of the center console.

2. Carefully, pull the panel outwards to provide access to the inside of the center console. Select a flat bladed screwdriver of suitable length to reach behind the center console, to the back of the blanking plate (1).

3. Position the screwdriver on the bottom edge of the blanking plate retaining nut (1) in such a way that the screwdriver bites into the edge of the nut. Gently tap the end of the screwdriver using the palm of the hand to overcome the initial tightness of the threaded nut. Spin off the nut from the blanking plate housing (2), and remove the blanking plate.

4. Assemble the "0"-ring (6) to the Voltmeter housing (5), and position in the groove as shown.

Position the nut (1) behind the Voltmeter aperture (7), and orient so that the inner threaded portion is away from the Voltmeter.

Locate the Voltmeter harness connectors behind center console. The Voltmeter requires the black double connector (4), a single natural connector with violet/yellow (green/yellow on later vehicles) wire (2), and a natural connector with a brown wire (3). Ignore any other connectors.

Thread the connectors through the nut (1) and through the Voltmeter aperture (7).

Push the connectors into place on the Voltmeter, making sure the violet/yellow (green/yellow on later vehicles) wire (2) is connected to the terminal marked "+".

5. Position the Voltmeter (1) in the Voltmeter aperture, making sure the "O"-ring stays in its groove.

Assemble the mounting nut (2), and tighten by hand.

Note:
This procedure may cause the bulbholder for the oil temperature gauge to be displaced. Check this bulbholder is firmly in place before reassembling the console.

Push the center console back into position, reinstall trim screws and caps.

Switch on ignition and lights, and check both the function and illumination of the Voltmeter.
