Service Engineering
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Replacement of A/C Suction Pipe on MY '01 E36/7 Vehicles
MODEL
E36/7 with M54 (Z3 coupe 3.0i, Z3 roadster 3.0i, Z3 roaster 2.5i) and manual transmissions, produced from 04/13/01 up to 04/30/01
SITUATION
Due to a manufacturing defect (restriction) in the A/C suction pipe between the evaporator and compressor, the cooling performance of the air conditioning system is decreased.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves Z3 roadster and Z3 coupe vehicles with M54 engines which were produced from April 13th, 2001 up to April 30th, 2001.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
On the affected vehicles replace A/C suction pipe between evaporator and A/C compressor.
PROCEDURE
The A/C suction pipe is located on the right (passenger) side of the engine compartment, and runs between the evaporator inlet/outlet mount on the bulkhead and the suction port of A/C compressor.
In order to replace the pipe:
1. Evacuate the R134a refrigerant from vehicle's A/C system, according to Repair Instruction RA 64 50 009 ("Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system R134a").
2. Using a 6 mm Allen wrench, remove two bolts securing the suction pipe at the A/C compressor, and at the double pipe on the bulkhead.
3. Disconnect the air hose from the secondary air non-return valve (mounted on the exhaust manifold), by pressing the locking tabs on the hose quick-connect fixture.
4. Release the pipe's plastic support bracket (mounted on the right side strut housing), and remove the A/C suction pipe from the vehicle.
5. Install the new pipe in the reverse order. Tighten securing bolts with 20Nm of torque.
6. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system according to RA 64 50 009.
7. Perform functional check of air conditioning system.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 310. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-170) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 310 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
