SUBJECT
Rear Hatch Latch Linkage Disconnects
MODEL
M coupe
SITUATION
The linkage rods connecting the rear hatch latch to the remotely located pushbutton assembly or the actuator motor can become separated from the latch, preventing opening the hatch from opening either by depressing the pushbutton, or, by turning the lock tumbler in the unlock direction.
CAUSE
The plastic clips that are molded as part of the white plastic arm to retain the linkage rods from to the latch actuating arm, can be weakened if undue force is applied during installation, leading to breakage of the clips over time.
CORRECTION
The linkage rods are positively secured to the latch arm with spring washers as of mid-March 2001 production.
These spring washers may also be used on earlier cars if the latch is replaced, to prevent separation of the linkage if the plastic clip should break.
