Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin supersedes Service Measure B54 200 04 dated March 2004.
SUBJECT
Panoramic Sunroof Gurgling Noise
MODEL
E83 (X3)
SITUATION
Some customers may complain of a gurgling or bubbling noise coming from the area of the sunroof or A-pillar area. This usually happens when the vehicle is driven in a light rain with the roof in the vent position at speeds of 50 MPH and up.
CAUSE
Under the proper conditions, the air pressure under the vehicle is higher than in the area of the sunroof especially when it is in the vent position. If water is trying to drain down the sunroof front drain tubes, the air moving up the tube due to the pressure differential bubbles through the water, causing the noise.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis, install a one-way valve.
PROCEDURE
Install a one-way valve, part number 54 13 7 060 976, in the lower end of each front drain tube. If the end of the tube is cut on an angle, cut it off square with a knife, clean out any dirt or moisture from inside the tube, and push the barbed end of the valve in to the stop.
