SUBJECT
Service Action: Left Front Brake Line Support Bracket Repair

MODEL
E53 (X5)

SITUATION
The left front brake line support bracket may not have been properly secured to the body during the assembly process.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 Sports Activity Vehicles produced between July 8, 200 and July 19, 2005.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System).

Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CAUSE
The left front brake line support bracket was fastened by using an incorrect spot welding process.

CORRECTION
Fasten the left front brake line support bracket to the body frame rail by using two rivets.

PROCEDURE
1. Lift the vehicle (Repair Instructions RA 00 ... "Lifting vehicle with a lifting platform"). Set the wheels straight ahead.

2. Remove the front left wheel (Repair Instructions RA 36 10 300 "Removing or installing front or rear wheel").

Installation Note: Torque M14 wheel bolts to 140Nm.

3. Remove large inner wheel well plastic liner/splash shield.

4. Remove the upper sway bar vertical link from strut assembly (Repair Instructions RA 31 35 005 "Removing and installing / replacing push rod for left/right stabilizer"). The lower mounting point can remain in place. Push link out of the way.

Installation Note:
Replace the M12 self locking nut, part number 33 32 6 751 446 and
tighten to 100 Nm.

5. Provide access for the rivet gun head to the
bracket (1) by disconnecting the brake line (2) from the brake hose (3) at the bracket. See Repair Instructions RA 34 32 881 "Replacing
front left or right brake hoses". Cover the brake line (2) and brake hose (3) to prevent any foreign matter from entering the brake system. Do
not allow the brake fluid to contact body paint.

Installation Note: Tighten brake line to 14Nm.

6. Remove the small (front) splash shield from
wheelwell. Also carefully remove the connector housing, part number 61 138 372 280.

7. Use a center punch to mark the location of the two rivets in the bracket (4). Position the rivets:

^ NOT directly on top of the factory-applied spot welds (5).

^ So the rivet head contacts the bracket surface.

8. Drill both holes with a 17/64" drill. Remove
any sharp edges and clean the holes with compressed air.

9. Apply two rivets (Part number: 83 19 0 301 414) to the bracket using a suitable heavy-duty long-arm rivet gun such as a Marson "Big Daddy Riverter" (# 39010) or Gesipa power gun (part number 81 43 0 301 745, see Service Information B04 08 05).

10. Apply body cavity wax to the back of the rivets by placing the wax on an acid brush. Access through the stamped body hole (6) in the frame rail.

11. Apply brushable seam sealer to fully cover both rivet heads and the bracket surface.

12. Reassemble vehicle.

13. Bleed front brake circuit per Repair Instructions RA 34 00 050.

14. Perform brief test drive to verify proper brake operation. Apply the brake gently numerous times during the drive.
