SUBJECT
S85 - SMG Transmission Faults 4FA0, 4F80 and Clutch is Damaged
MODEL
E60 M5 produced up to 4/06/2006
SITUATION
The Check Control message for a transmission fault is displayed and the transmission cannot be shifted out of neutral. The clutch may smell of being overheated and the SMG module has faults 4FA0 and/or 4F80 stored.
CAUSE
Possible causes may include:
1. Faulty machining of the dual-mass flywheel
2. Inadequate riveting of the clutch lining
3. Errors in the dual-mass flywheel/clutch assembly process during engine manufacturing
CORRECTION
If during fault troubleshooting the clutch is found to be damaged on vehicles produced prior to 4/06/2006, the dual-mass flywheel must also be replaced in addition to any necessary clutch components.
