SUBJECT
Transmission is in Failsafe with Fault 4FB4 Stored

MODEL
E70 with N52K and N62TU engines produced up to 3/1/2007

SITUATION
The transmission goes into the "failsafe" mode after the engine is started and "Reverse" gear is selected. Fault code 4FB4 - Gear control: internal error (control level 2, E-circuit) is stored in the EGS module. The check control message also may still be present if the engine is restarted. If the vehicle's bus system is allowed to go to sleep, normal transmission and gearshift operation is restored on the next engine start.

CAUSE
EGS software calibration sensitivity

CORRECTION
Do not replace any parts!

This will be corrected with Progman V25 and E70 Vehicle data status E070-07-03-5xx or higher which is expected in April 2007. Until the release of Progman V25 - this fault may be cleared, then turn the ignition off and let vehicle go to sleep. Check that normal transmission operation has been restored and release the vehicle back to the customer.
