SUBJECT
Service Action: Programming Control Units - Transmission Control

MODEL
X5 4.8i and X5 3.0si from SOP to 12/22/2006

SITUATION

A warning gong will sound or a warning is displayed in the instrument cluster if the driver's door is opened with a drive position selected.

If the driver were to leave the vehicle with the engine running and drive position "D" or "R" selected, the automatic transmission would automatically shift into park position "P". If the vehicle is not already secured by the parking brake in this situation, there is a possibility that the vehicle could move forward or backward a few feet until the parking lock engages.

This Service Action will shorten the response time of this function. Customers will be mailed letters notifying them of the Service Action shortly (copy of the customer letter is shown in this bulletin).

To minimize customer's inconvenience caused by this Service Action, you are being asked to pickup (and deliver after repair), if necessary, the affected vehicle from customer's home, and provide appropriate alternative transportation.

Customers will be impressed when you return their cars cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs can be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E70 X5 vehicles with N62TU and N52K engines which were produced from SOP to 12/21/2006.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Perform a complete vehicle coding, programming control units as necessary, using the latest version of Progman.

PROCEDURE

Code the complete vehicle per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, and Programming), procedure E, using Progman V24.02.00 or higher.

Only E70 vehicles with a current integration level of E070-06-12-540 or less are affected.

Important note:
In the case of vehicles with CCC (Car Communication Computer), it is essential to carry out a function check on the CCC if the measures plan prompts programming of the CCC-BO and CCC-GW, but not the CCC-A.

If the display only shows the "BMW logo", it is necessary to run the "Recreate boot file" service function in diagnostics. Refer to SI B65 49 06 for further information on this procedure.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 489 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
