Campaign - Front Driveshaft Bolt Replacement

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace Front Propeller Shaft Bolts

MODEL
E90, E91 (3 Series) 328xi, 328xiT and 335xi models

SITUATION
During the assembly process, the front propeller shaft bolts may have been insufficiently tightened.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 328xi, 328xiT and 335xi vehicles which were produced during December 2007.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the
response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.





The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
The bolts which secure the front propeller shaft at the front axle differential and transfer case must be replaced.

PROCEDURE





1. With the vehicle properly supported on a lift, remove the underbody panel located beneath the transmission.





2. Remove the 4 bolts which attach the front propeller shaft to the transfer case and support the propeller shaft.

3. Install 4 new bolts and tighten in the following steps:

a. 20Nm

b. Torque angle 45°





4. Remove the 4 bolts which attach the front propeller shaft to the front axle differential and support the propeller shaft.

5. Install 4 new bolts and tighten in the following
steps:

a. 20Nm

b. Torque angle 45°

6. Refit the underbody panel.





PARTS INFORMATION

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 523. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-352) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 523 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
