SUBJECT
The Parking Brake Warning Is Illuminated and Fault Code 6032 Is Stored

MODEL
E70 (X5)

SITUATION
Under certain conditions, the electro-mechanical parking brake (EMF) cannot be released using the center console switch. However, the parking brake can be released manually, following the instructions provided in the vehicle's Owner's Manual. This condition will cause the parking brake warning to illuminate in the instrument cluster, and fault code 6032 MECH FORCE will be stored in the parking brake control module (EMF).

CAUSE
When the parking brake is activated with the engine running, the vehicle's service brakes are applied via the Dynamic Stability Control System (DSC). After the ignition is switched off, the DSC signals the EMF to apply the parking brake shoes at the rear wheel brakes. During the ignition cycle, the signal between the DSC and the EMF can be interrupted. If the signal is interrupted, fault code 6032 MECH FORCE is stored in the EMF module, and the parking brake warning is illuminated.

CORRECTION
This situation will be corrected via a software update, available as of March 2008.

PROCEDURE

1. Check the fault memory for the EMF.

2. If fault code 6032 MECH FORCE is stored, clear the fault memory.

3. Check for proper function of the EMF.

4. [NEW] If the EMF does not function properly, perform the appropriate test modules and inspect the mechanical components of the system.

5. [NEW] If the system functions properly and no fault codes are stored, the vehicle must be programmed.

6. [NEW] Program the vehicle with the most recent Progman version (target data status E070-08-03-513 or later). Refer to SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming), Procedure B.

[NEW] Note that Progman will automatically reprogram all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

[NEW] In cases where Progman requires the replacement of control modules or additional programming because certain control modules failed to program correctly, print out the Measures Plan and Final Report as described in the Progman programming procedure (B09 05 01). Attach these reports to the RO in the vehicle file. This additional work should be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin using the labor operation and labor allowance from the KSD.
