SUBJECT
Washer Fluid Leaks onto the Carpet
MODEL
E70 (X5)
SITUATION
The carpet is wet with washer fluid in either the right front footwell, or the area behind the driver's seat. In addition, the rear washer jet is either inoperative, or is not flowing an adequate volume.
CAUSE
The cause of this leak is one of the following:
- The washer fluid supply line, located between the instrument panel and the transmission tunnel, is damaged.
- The supply line connection, located behind the driver's seat, has separated.
CORRECTION
Repair or reconnect to loose washer fluid supply line.
PROCEDURE
For washer fluid leaks in the right front footwell:
1. Pull back the carpet from the footwell area to expose the underside of the instrument panel and the right side of the transmission tunnel.
2. Clean and dry the wet areas of the carpet.
3. Operate the rear window washer, and the origin of the leak should be exposed.
4. The washer fluid supply line is wrapped in the wire harness, and may need to be separated to see the exact location of the leak.
5. Repair the damaged supply line using the wiper system repair kit (P/N 61 66 7 208 073).
For washer fluid leaks on the carpet behind the driver's seat:
1. Pull back the carpet from the door sill area behind the driver's seat to expose where the washer fluid supply line is routed toward the luggage compartment.
2. Clean and dry the wet areas of the carpet.
3. Check to see whether the connector on the supply line has separated even slightly, which will create a leak.
4. Seat the two halves of the connection fully. A snap can be heard when they are fully seated.
5. Secure the connector by wrapping a wire tie around it.
