SUBJECT
Rear Bumper Cover Sticks Out Below the Tail Lamp

MODEL
E71 (X6) produced up to 11/2008

SITUATION
The rear bumper cover does not fit properly immediately below the outboard tail lamp. Typically it sticks out noticeably farther than the adjacent tailgate.





The affected area is circled to the left. This situation may affect one or both sides of the bumper cover.

CAUSE
Poor locking of the tabs on the bumper cover, due to an interference condition adjacent to this fastener

CORRECTION
Trim the small interfering area on the bumper cover.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the tail lamp[s] from the affected side[s] of the vehicle per Repair Instruction RA63 21 180.





2. Release the innermost bumper cover retaining tab (1), and gently pull back on the bumper cover to expose the interfering area (2).





3. Trim A=3mm of material from the area shown (1) using a hand file or angled cutters, and ensure that it is free of burrs. Care should be taken not to damage the painted surface of the bumper cover.
