Body - Water Leak Into Right Front Footwell Area

SI B51 30 08
Body Equipment

November 2008
Technical Service

SUBJECT
Water Leak in the Front Right Footwell Area

MODEL
E70 (X5) produced up to 5/2008

E71 (X6) produced up to 5/2008

SITUATION
The carpet in the front right side footwell area is wet.

CAUSE
The water leak found may be attributed to either:

- Loosely fitting AC evaporator hoses

- A poorly fitted or damaged bulkhead gasket located in front of the heater box.

CORRECTION
Secure the evaporator hoses or replace the bulkhead gasket.

PROCEDURE
1. If the liquid on the carpet is washer fluid, refer to SI B51 12 08.

2. Inspect the evaporator drain hoses for leakage. If the leak can be reproduced without water testing the vehicle, this is the likely cause. If leakage is found, the drain tubes should be resecured.

3. If the drain tubes are secure, inspect the bulkhead gasket.

4. Look around the perimeter of the bulkhead gasket as it's secured to the bulkhead. The gasket can be most easily viewed from the engine compartment side with the micro filter removed.

If the gasket is warped or if the foam seal is missing, replace the gasket.

NOTE:
Water testing the bulkhead gasket from the engine compartment side, using a squeeze bottle filled with water, may help to determine the root cause of the leak.

5. Inspect the date code on the replacement part to ensure that it was produced after May 2008.

The clock style date code is read by the number of the month (1) and last 2 digits of the year (2). For example, if the arrows point to 10 and 06, the part was produced in October 2006.

6. Replacing the bulkhead gasket requires removing the heater box per Repair Instruction RA 64 11 206, and then feeding the engine wiring harness back through the front bulkhead.

7. The new bulkhead gasket should be secured to 6.5 Nm ±1.5 Nm.
