SUBJECT
Cracking or Banging Noise from Rear Axle

MODEL
E70 (X5 3.0si)
E71 (X6 xDrive35i)

SITUATION

The customer may report a cracking or banging noise from the rear of the vehicle while driving over rough roads, or during hard cornering.

CAUSE

When the rear suspension is compressed, the coil spring may stick to the upper mount. Then, if the suspension is rapidly extended, a cracking or banging noise from the spring mount may occur.

CORRECTION

The rear spring mounts can be coated with talcum powder, which will prevent the spring from sticking to the mount.

PROCEDURE

Raise the vehicle on a lift so that the rear wheels hang free. Clean the upper coils and mounts of the rear springs with a dry, lint-free shop rag. Do not use any cleaners or solvents on the mounts.

Apply a liberal coating of talcum powder (baby powder) to the mount (1) and spring in the contact area. Use a soft paint brush to cover as much of the contact area as possible.

[NEW] Apply a liberal coating of the same talcum powder onto the lower mount contact area with a brush.
