SI B51 34 11
Engine Electrical Systems

November 2011
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B12 07 11 dated October 2011.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Seal the Engine Compartment Center Bulkhead Partition

MODEL
E70 (X5 xDrive 35i) and E71 (X6 xDrive 35i) with the N55 engine produced from SOP to 10/30/2010

SITUATION
Water may enter the engine compartment, which could cause corrosion to form. Corrosion formation over the lifetime of the vehicle can lead to more extensive repair work.

CAUSE
Due to insufficient sealing on the engine bulkhead partitions, increased amounts of water may enter the engine compartment during heavy rain or melting snow.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E70 (X5 xDrive 35i) and E71 (X6 xDrive 35i) vehicles with the N55 engine produced from SOP to 10/30/2010.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 603. If code number 603 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 603 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE
Seal the engine compartment bulkhead as described in Repair Instruction:

51 71.. Sealing the units compartment partition wall, top center

Additional pictures of the repair may also be found in the attachment below.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 603. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-403) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 603 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
