Timing Chain and Sprocket

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tool Required
- J 5825-A Crankshaft Gear Puller





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution In Service Precautions.

2. Drain the coolant. Recover the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
4. Place the #1 piston at top dead center (#4 firing position). Align the mark on the camshaft sprocket with timing mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener.
5. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
6. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
7. Remove the timing chain.





8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket. Use the J 5825-A Crankshaft Gear Puller

IMPORTANT: If the sprocket does not come off easily, a light blow on the lower edge of the sprocket (with a plastic mallet) should dislodge the sprocket.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

- J 38612 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer





1. Install the crankshaft sprocket. Use the J 38612.
2. Apply prelube GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the sprocket thrust surface.
3. Install the crankshaft timing chain dampener to the cylinder block.
^ Tighten the timing chain dampener bolt to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

4. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket to the mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener.





5. Hold the camshaft sprocket with the timing chain hanging down.
6. Install the timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket.
7. Align the centerline of the locator hole, on the camshaft sprocket, with the timing mark on the top of the timing chain dampener.
8. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket.
9. Use the mounting bolts to draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft.
^ Tighten the bolt to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

10. Lubricate the timing chain with engine oil.
11. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
12. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
