Steering Wheel
REMOVAL PROCEDURE^ Tools Required:
- J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
- J-36541-A Steering Wheel Puller Legs
- Or Equivalents
1. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
CAUTION: Always disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system when servicing the SIR components, or the SIR wiring. Failure to follow the disabling procedures could result in possible deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.
2. Reposition the locking tab on the steering wheel nut.
3. Remove the steering wheel nut.
4. Remove the steering wheel nut locking tab.
5. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering column.
6. Remove the steering wheel using J 1859-A and J-3654 1-A.
NOTICE: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the steering wheel to the column using the matchmarks.
2. Install the steering wheel nut locking tab.
3. Install the steering wheel nut.
NOTICE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
^ Tighten the nut to 28 Nm (21 lb ft).
4. Secure the nut with the locking tab.
5. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
