INFORMATION
Subject:
Use of Loctite(R) on Front Lower Control Arm to Ball Joint
Model:
1997 Cadillac DeVille with B9Q, V4U
Built Between the Following VIN Breakpoints:
Option VIN Breakpoints
B9Q VU500000 - VU500198
V4U VU700000 - VU700182
When servicing vehicles built within the above listed VIN breakpoints, a condition may occur, whereby if lifted by the lower control arm, the ball joint may separate from the lower control arm. If these vehicles are to be lifted by the lower control arm, or if the ball joint becomes separated, perform the following procedure.
Procedure
Apply a coating of Loctite(R) RC/609, or equivalent, to the perimeter of the ball joint surface where it is pressed into the front control arm by following the steps below.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Clean the top surface of the front lower control arm around the lower ball joint housing using Loctite(R) Primer T747, or equivalent. Apply enough primer to ensure that it will flow between the ball joint housing and the lower control arm. Do not allow the primer to come in contact with the lower ball joint seal. Allow the primer to dry 15 minutes.
3. Apply a bead, approximately 3 mm (1/8 in.) wide of Loctite(R) RC/609, or equivalent, around the complete periphery of the ball joint housing and lower control arm interface (top surface of lower control arm). Ensure that the bead of Loctite(R) RC/609, or equivalent, is contacting the ball joint housing and the control arm (see Figure 1).
4. With a brass hammer, strike the bottom of the lower control arm repeatedly around the ball joint. This will encourage penetration of the Loctite(R), or equivalent, between the ball joint housing and the lower control arm. Do not wipe off excess Loctite(R) RC/609, or equivalent.
5. Allow the Loctite(R), or equivalent, to cure per the package directions. Any excess Loctite(R), or equivalent, may be wiped off at this time.
