Battery Cable: Service and Repair




REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Open the battery isolator.
2. Open the electrical center cover and push the tab to release the electrical center from the battery.
3. Remove the harness ground wires from the battery negative cable.
4. Remove the battery negative cable:
^ Loosen the clamp bolt.
^ Use a twisting motion in order to release the cable.
^ Use a universal puller if the cable does not easily release.
5. Remove the tie straps retaining the battery negative cable to the radiator inlet hose and the engine bracket.
6. Raise the vehicle on a suitable support.
7. Remove negative battery cable from the NC compressor bracket:
^ Remove the bolt (2).
^ Remove the cable (1).
8. Attach a three toot length of mechanic's wire to the end of the battery negative cable.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Pull the battery negative cable up until the mechanic's wire is visible.
11. Remove the mechanic's wire from the battery negative cable.

IMPORTANT: Leave the mechanic's wire in place in the vehicle for the next step so that the battery negative cable can be properly routed behind the thermostat housing extension and the P/S pump.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the mechanic's wire to the battery negative cable.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Pull the mechanic's wire down until the battery negative cable is visible.
4. Remove the mechanic's wire from the battery negative cable.
5. Install the battery negative cable to the A/C compressor bracket:
^ Install the cable (1).
^ Install the bolt (2).

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 25 N.m (18 LB ft).

6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Install the tie straps.
8. Install the battery negative cable to the battery.

Tighten
Tighten the cable clamp bolt to 6 N.m (53 lb in)/.

9. Close the battery isolator.
10. Reposition the electrical harness.
11. Program all applicable accessories.
