This bulletin is being issued to add new information to Section 8 - "Entertainment" of the Service Manual.
Delco-Bose(R) System
On Delco-Bose(R) systems, the radio passes the line level output audio signals to the radio signal processor for processing, and then to the radio speaker amplifier for amplification to the speakers. The single amplifier powers all of the speakers.
The radio internally grounds the speakers in all Delco-Bose [R] music systems. Improper installation of add-ons such as tape players, CBs, etc., may damage the system.
The 1x24 dot matrix Vacuum Tube Fluorescent (VTF) display has the capability to show all messages in the default language of English and in French, German, Japanese Katikana and Spanish.
Backlighting for the radio is provided by incandescent lamps behind the buttons and the trimplate (PWR and VOL) inserts. The PWM signal for incandescent backlighting is supplied from the vehicle lighting center and connected directly to the lamps via pins E5 and F5 of the main connector.
When a cassette or CD is not loaded, the halo light surrounding the openings will be lit. When a cassette or CD is loaded, the halo light will extinguish.
Radio Data Systems (RDS)
RDS is the European standard for providing information inaudibly via an FM subcarrier band. The US has adopted a similar standard called the Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS). This feature is not available in the AM or weather modes, however the feature is available when the radio is playing a cassette or CD.
RDS features are only available for use on FM stations which broadcast RDS information. RDS information includes the ability to seek for stations with the type of programming desired, traffic announcements, emergency broadcasts and searches for a stronger station (with the same program type) when a station is too weak for listening.
Theft Protection
Theftlock mode will activate if a valid VIN is stored in the radio and it does not match the last reported VIN via Class 2 communication. DTC B1780 will set and the DTC will store to radio memory.
If a valid VIN is stored in the radio memory, and a VIN is not reported since battery power for the radio was received, theftlock mode will activate. As in the previous event. DTC B1780 will set and store to radio memory.
When theftlock is active, and the radio is installed in a different vehicle with the same power mode, the radio will display "Locked - THEFTLOCK Active".
If a radio, with theftlock active, is installed in a different vehicle with a different power mode, the radio display will be blank.
DTC B1780 will automatically clear when the radio receives the correct VIN or it may be cleared with the scan tool.
Use the scan tool to clear a previous VIN from radio memory. Once the memory is clear and the radio is powered up, the radio will automatically capture the vehicle's VIN via the Class 2 communication loop and store it to memory.
Media Cooling
If the temperature of the cassette or the CD reaches 60°C (140°F) while the radio is on, an internal cooling fan will come on to cool the cassette or CD. When the temperature has been reduced to 50°C (122°F), the fan will shut off.
