Bulletin No.: 05-02-32-006

Date: September 27, 2005

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Moan Type Noise During Low Speed Turning Maneuvers (Replace Accessory Drive Belt)

Models:
2006 Cadillac STS

with 4.6L V8 Engine (VIN A - RPO LH2)
Built Prior to August 8, 2005

Condition

Some customers may comment on an audible moan type noise that is heard during low speed turning maneuvers, such as in parking lots.

Cause

This noise may be due a power steering system vibration caused by the accessory drive belt.

Correction

Following the procedure below, replace the existing accessory drive belt with a new belt. This new belt has a different cord material which eliminates the power steering system vibration.

1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield.

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.

3. If equipped with a crankshaft driven cooling fan, remove the cooling fan bracket.

3.1. Loosen the fan nut from the crank adapter shaft using J 41240-2.

3.2. Continue to loosen the fan nut and disconnect the fan from the crank adapter shaft.

3.3. Position the fan forward inside the fan shroud.

3.4. Remove the fan bracket to engine block bolts.

3.5. Remove the fan bracket from the vehicle.

4. Rotate the drive belt tensioner (2) clockwise to release drive belt tension.

5. Slide the drive belt from the water pump pulley (1).

6. Slide the drive belt out from behind the drive belt tensioner. Access the belt from the side of the tensioner pulley in the location of the lower power steering reservoir mounting nut.

7. Allow the drive belt tensioner to return to the relaxed position.

8. Remove the accessory drive belt from the remaining pulleys.

9. Route the new drive belt to the accessory drive pulleys, excluding the tensioner (2) and the water pump pulley (1).

10. Rotate the drive belt tensioner (2) clockwise.

11. Slide the drive belt behind the drive belt tensioner and around the tensioner pulley. Access the belt from the side of the tensioner pulley in the location of the lower power steering reservoir mounting nut.

12. Route the drive belt under the water pump pulley (1).

Important:
Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.

13. Release the drive belt tensioner and inspect the drive belt for proper seating in the accessory drive pulleys.

14. If equipped with a crankshaft driven cooling fan, install the cooling fan bracket.

14.1. Install the fan bracket to the vehicle.

14.2. Install the fan bracket to engine block bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 24 Nm (18 lb ft).

14.3. Install the fan to crank adapter shaft and hand tighten.

14.4. Tighten and torque the fan nut to crank adapter shaft.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft).

15. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.

16. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
