Engine - Oil Leak at Oil Filter Adapter Pipe Fittings

LC3 Engine Oil Leak (Seepage) at External Oil Cooler Pipes to Oil Filter Adaptor (Install Threadlocker (Red) to Oil Filter Adaptor Pipe Fittings)

Models:
2006 Cadillac XLR-V

with 4.4L DOHC Northstar(R) Supercharged V8 (VIN D - RPO LC3)

Condition

Some customers may comment on engine oil leak. Upon further investigation, the technician may find an oil leak at the engine oil filter adaptor pipe fittings.

Correction

Repair the oil leak by installing high-strength, high-temperature threadlocker (red) to the engine oil filter adaptor pipe fittings following the service procedure below.

Important:
Print all procedures in SI that are referred to below before performing this repair.

Service Procedure





1. Disconnect the external engine oil cooler pipes from the engine clip.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.

3. Install an oil drain pan under the vehicle.

Important:
If the oil filter is not removed, engine oil can accumulate on top of the oil filter from the removal of the external engine oil cooler pipes. The oil on top of the oil filter will be undetected and the customer will return.

4. Remove the engine oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement in SI.





5. Remove the external engine oil cooler pipes from the engine oil filter adaptor. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Pipe/Hose Quick Connect Fitting in SI.





6. Remove the external engine oil cooler pipe fittings from the engine oil filter adaptor. Refer to item 1 in the illustration above.

7. Clean any engine oil and/or debris from the engine oil filter adaptor.

8. Clean any engine oil and/or debris from the engine oil filter adaptor pipe fittings.





9. Install 10 drops of P/N 89021297 (in Canada, use P/N 10953488) high-strength, high-temperature threadlocker (red) to the engine oil filter adaptor pipe fittings.

Important:
Reuse the old seals to the external engine oil cooler pipes.

10. Install the engine oil filter adaptor pipe fittings with the installed threadlocker (red).

Tighten

Tighten the oil filter adapter fittings to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

Important:
The quick connect fitting must be pushed on and then pulled back to verify proper connector engagement.

11. Install the external engine oil cooler pipes to the engine oil filter adapter. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Pipe/Hose Quick Connect Fitting in SI.

12. Lightly oil the oil filter gasket with clean oil.

Important:
Fill the oil filter with engine oil.

13. Install the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement in SI.

14. Remove oil drain pan from under the vehicle.

15. Lower the vehicle.

16. Connect the external engine oil cooler pipes to the engine clip.

17. Adjust the engine oil level to the full mark.

18. Start the vehicle and inspect for oil leaks.
