Engine: Service and Repair

CAMARO

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner and fresh air hoses.
2. Disconnect electrical connectors from hood lamp or air door, if equipped, mark position of hood hinges for reassembly, and remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system, remove radiator hoses, and disconnect heater hoses from engine.
4. If equipped with A/C, disconnect electrical connector from compressor clutch and ground wire from bracket, remove compressor and secure aside.
5. Disconnect and plug transmission cooler lines at radiator, if equipped, then remove fan blade, shroud and radiator. On 4-151 engines with manual transmission, only fan blade and upper shroud should be removed.
6. On V6 and V8 engines, remove power steering pump retaining bolts and secure pump aside. On 4-151 engines, disconnect and plug power steering hoses at pump.
7. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control linkage at throttle and brackets, then the vacuum hoses from all body mounted accessories, and secure cables and hoses.
8. Disconnect and plug fuel supply and return hoses. On models with EFI, relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting hoses.
9. On V6 and V8 engines, proceed as follows:
a. Remove distributor cap and lay wiring aside.
b. Disconnect electrical connectors to alternator, distributor and all other engine mounted switches and accessories.
c. Release engine harness from retaining clips and secure harness aside.
10. On 4-151 engines, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect engine electrical harness at bulkhead connector.
b. From inside vehicle, lower right hush panel and remove ECM harness from main ECM connector.
c. Remove splash shield from right inner fender and carefully pull ECM harness into engine compartment.
d. Secure harnesses to engine.
11. Disconnect battery and chassis ground straps from engine, then raise and support vehicle.
12. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds, and on 4-151 engines, remove exhaust pipe assembly.
13. On V6 and V8 engines, disconnect electrical connectors and battery cable from starter and remove wiring shields. On 4-151 engines, disconnect electrical connectors from transmission and remove starter.
14. Remove flywheel shield and bolts securing converter to flex plate, if equipped. Mark position of converter in relation to flex plate for reassembly.
15. On models with manual transmission, remove clutch linkage.
16. Remove motor mount through bolts and bolts securing bellhousing to engine.
17. Lower vehicle and support transmission with suitable floor jack.
18. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine lifting brackets, remove bracket securing AIR injection pipe, then raise engine and transmission assembly.
19. Separate engine and transmission, and lift engine from vehicle after removing bracket from rear of left cylinder head (V6 and V8). On automatic transmission models, ensure that converter remains with transmission during engine removal, and that it is properly seated prior to engine installation.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
