Evaporator Core: Service and Repair
EVAPORATOR CORE
The evaporator and blower assembly is designed so that the core may be removed without having to remove the entire unit from the vehicle.
Replacement
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Purge system of refrigerant.
3. Remove carburetor air cleaner assembly, AIR pipe at manifold, PCV, carburetor heat stove and engine thermal switch as necessary.
4. Remove the coolant recovery system container screws and lay to one side.
5. Remove the Accumulator bracket screw and lay the Accumulator unit out of the way (condenser and compressor lines still attached).
6. Disconnect all wires and vacuum hoses attached to the evaporator assembly.
7. Remove evaporator cover to dash panel stud nuts and cover to evaporator case screws.
8. Pull cover outward and upward, being careful not to damage the core in any way.
9. Remove core being careful not to damage.
10. Reverse the above steps for core replacement.
11. Add three fluid oz. of clean refrigeration oil to the new core. Use new "0" rings coated with clean refrigeration oil, when connecting all lines.
12. Evacuate, charge and check the system.
