Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect negative battery cable and raise car.

2. Remove propeller shaft, disconnect speedometer cable, detent cable, modulator vacuum line and oil cooler lines. Disconnect catalytic converter support bracket from transmission.

3. Disconnect shift linkage.

4. Support transmission with suitable jack and remove crossmember.

5. Remove converter under pan.

6. Remove converter to flywheel bolts.

7. On all models except Nova, loosen exhaust pipe to manifold bolts approximately 1/4 inch. Lower transmission until jack is barely supporting transmission. On V8 engines, care must be taken not to lower the rear of the transmission too far as the distributor housing may be forced against firewall causing damage to the distributor.

8. Remove transmission to engine mounting bolts and remove oil filler tube at transmission.

9. Raise transmission to its normal position, support engine with jack and slide transmission rearward from engine and lower it away from vehicle.

10. Reverse procedure to install.
