Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Engine coolant.
3. TBI cover.
4. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
5. Exhaust pipe.
6. Heater hose from intake.
7. Accelerator and T.V. cable bracket.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Remaining vacuum lines at intake manifold and thermostat.
10. Accelerator linkage at TBI.
11. Wires as necessary.
12. Upper radiator hose at thermostat.
13. Serpentine belt.
14. Power steering pump and lay aside.
15. Fuel lines.
16. Alternator with wires and lay aside.
17. Alternator rear brace.
18. Rocker arm cover.
19. Rocker arms and push rods.

NOTE: Whenever valve train components are removed for service, they should be kept in order. They should be installed in the same locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.

20. Cylinder head bolts
21. Cylinder head with manifolds and TBI unit.

22. Clean gasket surfaces on both the head and the block. Cylinder bolt threads in the block and threads on the cylinder head bolts must be clean.




INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Cylinder head gasket. Coat both sides of gasket with GM 1050026 sealer or equivalent, then position over dowel pins on cylinder block.
2. Carefully guide cylinder head into place over dowel pins and gaskets.
3. Install all head bolts finger tight, then tighten in sequence:
^ Bolts 1,4,5,8 and 9 to 99-113 Nm (73-83 ft lbs).
^ Bolts 2,3,6,7 and 10 to 85-95 Nm (62-70 ft lbs).

4. Push rods.
5. Rocker arms.
6. Rocker Cover.
7. Alternator brace.
8. Alternator and wires.
9. Fuel lines.
10. Power steering pump.
11. Serpentine belt.
12. Upper radiator hose at thermostat.
13. Wires as necessary.
14. Accelerator linkage at TBI.
15. Vacuum lines at intake manifold and thermostat.
16. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
17. Heater hose to intake.
18. Accelerator and T.V. cable bracket.
19. Exhaust pipe.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. TBI cover.
22. Engine coolant.
23. Negative battery cable.
24. Inspect for fluid leaks and proper fluid level.
