Fuel Pump: Service and Repair
ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP - 4.3 L
Removal
1. Make sure the ignition switch is in the "Off" position.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Unplug the 12V and ground leads from the pump.
4. Use 3/4" wrench to support the inlet fitting firmly and, with 5/8" wrench, unscrew the inlet tube.
5. Follow step 4 to unscrew the outlet fitting. Place a rag under the pump outlet side to collect fuel since the line is slightly pressurized.
NOTICE: Do not overtwist the pump outlet fitting; otherwise, cover crimp may be loosened.
6. Remove the pump mounting bracket nut and then the pump.
Installation Procedure
1. Remove dust plugs from inlet and outlet fittings of the pump.
2. Install the pump and bracket assembly on the engine. Use 24 Nm (18 lbs.ft.) torque to tighten the pump mounting bracket nut.
3. With 26 Nm (19 lbs.ft.) torque, tighten inlet and outlet fuel lines.
NOTICE: In some instances, it may be necessary to adjust pump location by loosening the bracket screw, turning the pump to get the exact alignment between pump fittings and fuel lines. Be sure to torque the bracket screw to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) after the adjustment.
4. After pump is installed, disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter and turn on the ignition switch in order to prime and bleed the lines. Use a catch basin to collect diesel fuel. If, after torquing the fuel line, the pump runs with a click-like sound or air bubbles show up in the fuel, check for leaks in the line. Also, check all connections to see that they are dry and that no fuel is leaking. When the click~like sound disappears, tighten the fuel line at the filter.
