Steering Column - Removal and Installation


CHEVROLET REAR WHEEL DRIVE EXC. CHEVETTE
REMOVAL
Except 1984---87 Corvette
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.
3. Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.
4. Remove left lower instrument panel trim and/or lap cooler duct, then disconnect all electrical wire connectors from steering column.
5. Remove screws attaching toe plate to dash panel.
6. Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel.
7. Disconnect shift position indicator cable, if equipped with automatic transmission, then withdraw steering column from vehicle.

Camaro
1. Install column bracket (A) onto steering column, Fig. 6. Torque bolts to 18 lb ft in the following sequence, (B), (C), (D) and (E).
2. Install wire connector to ignition switch.
3. Position steering column to body and loosely install capsule nuts (F), Fig. 6.
4. Install intermediate shaft joint over steering column lower shaft. Install nut and bolt and torque to 44 lb ft
5. Position cover and seal (G) to dash panel and install screws (H) and torque to 45 lb in
6. Tighten capsule nuts (F) to 18 lb ft
7. Install screws (J) at slotted locations and torque to 45 lb in
