Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner assembly.2. Disconnect overdrive throttle valve cable from throttle linkage.
3. Remove distributor cap to prevent damage and lay cap aside, leaving plug wires connected.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove complete exhaust system as follows:
a. Disconnect AIR pipe from converter and remove AIR pipe clamps from manifold.
b. Disconnect electrical connector to oxygen sensor.
c. Remove bolts securing exhaust hangers to mufflers and hanger bracket from converter.
d. Disconnect exhaust system from manifolds and remove system as an assembly.
e. Remove exhaust hanger from transmission.
6. Support transmission with suitable jack
7. Remove bolts securing driveline beam to transmission and axle housings, then the driveline beam.
8. Mark installation position of propeller shaft, then remove shaft assembly.
CAUTION: Tape bearing cups to universal joints to prevent loss of needle bearings.
9. Disconnect oil cooler lines and throttle valve cable from overdrive unit.
10. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission side cover, noting position for installation.
11. Disconnect electrical connectors from transmission and overdrive unit.
12. Lower transmission and support engine.
13. Remove bolts securing transmission to bell housing, slide transmission rearward until input shaft clears housing, then lower transmission from vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install. When installing driveline support beam note the following:
a. To ensure proper alignment of driveline, a clearance of 1.52 to 2.02 must be maintained between the top of beam to the under body.
b. A clearance of 0.85 to 1.35 inches must be maintained from the right hand side of the beam to the side wall.
c. These measurements should be taken directly above and to the right of the propeller shaft yoke.
