Truck Engine Production Code Explanation

1985 LIGHT TRUCK ENGINE CODES:

1985MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK ENG. CODES:

Chevrolet produced engines, except 6.2L diesel, will be stamped with a source, production date, and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in Chevrolet vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

NOTICE: In addition, all 10-30 Series Trucks have a portion of the vehicle identification number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This identification number consists of the division code, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle build sequence number.

The truck engine codes are located as follows:


V6 4.3L 262 CID

Stamped on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.


L6 292 CID

The engine suffix and build date is steel stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the right side of the cylinder case adjacent to the distributor shaft.
L4 2.5L

The code is on a sticker placed on the rear of the cylinder head and is also stamped on the block, water pump end, just below the cylinder head. This is a three (3) letter alpha-numeric code indicating engine type.


V8

305, 350 CID Engines - the code is stamped on the cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right hand cylinder head.

366, 427, 454 CID Engines - the code is stamped on a pad on the front top center of the cylinder case immediately forward of the inlet manifold.


V8 Diesel

6.2L (379 cu. in.)

Engine Suffix Build
Assembly Code Plant Sequence

For product reports use suffix, plant code and sequential number, i.e. - DJHR 4441.


L4 1.9L 119 CID

The code is stamped on the right front corner of the cylinder head mating surface of the block.


V6 2.8L 173 CID

The code is stamped on a horizontal machined surface of the block just forward of the intake manifold.


L4 2.2L 136 CID

The code is stamped on a vertical machined surface on the left hand side of the block near the front.
