Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

General System Description

Electronic Instrument Cluster:

Instrument Cluster Legend:

CAUTION: Service of the instrument cluster is limited to replacement of the indicator and illumination bulbs, replacement of the tachometer gauge, and removal/replacement of the non-volatile odometer memory module (if the digital cluster is sent in for repairs). If the digital cluster is sent in for repairs, check with the repair facility for a list of the items that must be removed prior to sending the unit in for repairs.

When replaceing a speedometer or odometer assembly, the law requires that the odometer reading of the replacement unit to be set to register the same milage as the prior odometer. Check with state laws to insure proper compliance.

See the circuit referred to for the complete operation of an indicator and the other components that work with it. Only the indicators that do not appear in other schematics are described in this section.

With the ignition switch in the RUN, BULB TEST, or START position, voltage is available through fuse 1 to the SHIFT, BRAKES, SERVICE ENGINE, LOW COOLANT, and fasten seatbelts indicators. The other indicators receive power from the circuits of the systems for those functions they are designed.

Battery voltage, coolant temperature, and oil pressure indicators receive their input directly from solid state devices and work directly with their respective gauges.

The instrument cluster has a vacuum fluorescent (VF) digital display for the speedometer, odometer, and outside temperature. The gauge display functions are VF bar graphs, except tachometer, which is an air core gauge.

The odometer display is a multifunction display which includes both total odometer and trip odometer indicators. Both are switch selectable and utilize the same display.

The information stored in the total odometer is retained in a removable "non-volatile memory" which MUST stay with the car. If the odometer is tampered with, then the odometer shall display "odoerr" during power up sequence. If the odometer is defective, then it will read "odoerr" at all times.
