Clutch: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. On 1982-84 models, disconnect clutch cable from clutch release lever and transaxle as follows:

a. Support clutch pedal upward against bumper stop to release pawl from quadrant.

b. Disconnect cable from clutch release lever on transaxle. Use care to avoid cable from snapping toward rear of vehicle.

c. Disconnect cable from quadrant. Lift the locking pawl away from quadrant, then slide cable out on right side.

3. On 1985-88 models, remove hush panel from driver's foot well, then disconnect clutch master cylinder push rod from clutch pedal.

4. Remove transaxle as outlined under "Manual Transaxle, Replace" procedure.

5. Mark position of pressure plate to flywheel to aid reassembly.

6. Gradually loosen pressure plate to flywheel attaching bolts until spring tension is relieved.




7. Support pressure plate and remove attaching bolts, pressure plate and driven disc.

8. Clean pressure plate and flywheel mounting surfaces. Inspect bearing retainer outer surface of the transaxle.




9. Place pressure plate and driven disc in position and support with tool No. J-29074. The driven disc is installed with the damper springs offset toward the transaxle. Stamped letters found on the driven disc identify the "Flywheel Side."

10. Install and gradually torque the pressure plate to flywheel attaching bolts to 15 ft lbs. Remove support tool.

11. Lubricate the release bearing outside diameter roove and inside diameter recess with lubricant No. 1051344 or equivalent. Also lightly lubricate input shaft spline.

12. Install transaxle.

CAUTION: On models equipped with hydraulic clutch system, do not move clutch lever toward flywheel until after transaxle has been installed to engine, as damage to transaxle may result.

13. On models with mechanical clutch linkage, connect clutch cable, then adjust as described under "Mechanical Clutch Linkage, Adjust."

14. On models with hydraulic clutch system, connect clutch master cylinder push rod to clutch pedal, then install hush panel.

15. On all models, connect battery ground cable.
