Removal and Replacement

1. Remove air cleaner assembly, then disconnect TV cable at its upper end. Remove transmission oil dipstick and bolt holding dipstick tube, if accessible.
2. Raise and support vehicle and remove driveshaft.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable, shift linkage, and all electrical leads at transmission as well as any clips that retain the leads to the transmission case.
4. Remove flywheel cover, mark flywheel and torque converter to maintain original balance. Remove torque converter to flywheel bolts and/or nuts.
5. On gasoline engine vehicles, disconnect catalytic converter support bracket.
6. On all vehicles equipped, remove floor pan reinforcement if it interferes with removal or installation of driveshaft.
7. On all vehicles, remove transmission support to transmission mount bolt and transmission support to frame bolts and insulators, if used.
8. Position a suitable jack under transmission, raise transmission slightly, and slide transmission support rearward.
9. Lower transmission to gain access to oil cooler lines and TV cable attachments, disconnect oil cooler lines and TV cable, and cap all openings.
10. Support engine with suitable tool, remove transmission to engine bolts, and disconnect transmission assembly.
11. Install torque converter holding fixture tool, No. J-21366 or equivalent, then remove transmission assembly from vehicle.
12. Reverse procedure to install.
