Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system into suitable container, then remove air intake hose from between air cleaner cover and Throttle Body Injection (TBI) unit.
3. Remove accessory drive belt.
4. Remove air cleaner retainer, then disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses.
5. Remove power steering pump front bolts.
6. Disconnect fuel lines and necessary vacuum hoses.
7. Disconnect shift cables from transaxle, then the throttle cable(s) from TBI unit.
8. Remove wiring shield at bulkhead, then disconnect engine harness at bulkhead.
9. Disconnect wires at Electronic Control Module (ECM), then pull wires through bulkhead.
10. Remove any wires interfering with engine removal.
11. Remove relay bracket from bulkhead.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust system at exhaust manifold and position aside.
13. Disconnect coolant inlet and outlet hoses from heater core.
14. Remove rear power steering pump bolt.
15. Disconnect stabilizer bar at left side lower control arm and support.
16. Remove transaxle strut from left hand support.

17. Drain transaxle lubricant, then remove front wheels.
18. Disengage drive axles from transaxle.
19. Remove support to body attaching bolts, then swing supports aside.
20. Disconnect A/C compressor mounting bolts (if equipped) and position aside.
21. Remove clutch slave cylinder from transaxle and position aside with hydraulic line connected.
22. Position engine support table J-36295 or equivalent under engine/transaxle assembly, then lower vehicle until engine/transaxle assembly is resting on table. Secure engine/transaxle to table.
23. Remove transaxle through bolt, then remove power steering pump from bracket and position aside.
24. Remove front mount to engine attaching bolts.
25. Remove rear mount and bracket assembly.
26. Slowly raise vehicle ensuring engine/transaxle assembly clears components.
27. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Figs. 1 and 2, for engine mount torque specifications.
