Removal

1. Remove the transaxle.

2. Install Tool J-34860 into the pilot bearing to support the clutch assembly during removal Look for "X" mark or white painted letter on the clutch cover and "X" mark stamped on the flywheel. If there is no markings, mark flywheel and clutch cover for assembly purposes.

3. Loosen the clutch cover to flywheel attaching bolts evenly one turn at a time until spring pressure is released, then remove the bolt Remove the clutch cover, clutch disc and Tool J-34860 from the flywheel.

Inspection

Clean the flywheel mating surfaces of all oil, grease, metal deposits, etc. Inspect the flywheel for cracks, heat checking or other defects. Replace or repair as required.

Check the wear on the facings of the clutch disc by measuring the depth of each rivet head depression. If the depth is found to have reached the service limit at any of the holes, replace the clutch disc assembly.

Check the diaphragm spring and pressure plate for wear or damage. If the spring or plate is excessively worn, or damaged, replace the clutch cover assembly. Do not disassemble the clutch cover assembly. If defective, replace the assembly.

Check the pilot bearing for smooth operation. If the bearing does not spin freely, replace it.

Installation

2. Install the clutch cover bolts and tighten down evenly and gradually until tight to avoid possible clutch distortion. Torque bolts to specifications.
3. Remove Tool 3-34860.
