Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery
2. Air cleaner, mounting bracket, MAF sensor and air tube as an assembly.
3. Exhaust crossover bolts at RH manifold.
4. LH exhaust manifold bolts at cylinder head.
- Raise and support manifold/crossover assembly.
5. T.V. cable at throttle lever and transaxle.
6. Vent hose.
7. Shift cable.
8. Neutral start switch and T.C.C. connector.





9. Fill tube support bolt.
- Fluid level indicator and tube.
10. Install engine support fixture J 28467 with adapter J 35953.
11. Nut securing wiring harness at transaxle.





12. Transaxle mount thru bolt.
13. Transaxle mount bracket at transaxle.
14. Transaxle mount.





15. Upper transaxle to engine bolts.
16. Raise car and suitably support.
17. Both front wheel and tires.
18. LH splash shield.





19. Transaxle converter cover.





20. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.





21. Torsional strut at transaxle.





22. Lateral strut at transaxle.





23. Transaxle brace bolts.
24. Speedometer wire connector.
25. Shift cable bracket.
26. Install drive axle seal protectors.


NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure.


27. Disengage bolt drive axles.
28. Left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
29. Left stabilizer shaft bushing clamp nuts at support.
30. Left frame support bolts and swing aside.





31. Cooler lines at transaxle.
- Plug to prevent leakage.
32. Position transaxle jack and secure.
33. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
34. Transaxle assembly.


INSPECT

^ For inspection and overhaul procedures refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.


CLEAN

- Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J 35944 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case. Follow the tool manufacturer instructions for flushing the oil cooler and lines.


INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a small wipe of light grease on the torque converter pilot hub.

^ Make sure to properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.

2. Position transaxle in car.

IMPORTANT

- Guide the RH drive axle into its bore as the transaxle is being raised. The RH shaft cannot be readily installed after the transaxle is bolted to the engine.

3. Lower transaxle to engine bolts. Remove transaxle jack.
4. Cooler lines at transaxle.
5. Position LH drive axle shaft into the transaxle.
6. Left frame support bolts.
7. Left stabilizer shaft bushing clamp nuts at support.
8. Left stabilizer shaft link pin bolt.
9. Seat drive axles in transaxle.
10. Remove bolt seal protectors.
11. Shift cable bracket.
12. Speedometer wire connector.
13. Transaxle brace bolts.
14. Lateral strut at transaxle.
15. Torsional strut at transaxle.
16. Torque converter to flywheel bolts.
- 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Retorque the first bolt after all three have been tightened.
17. Transaxle converter cover.
18. LH splash shield.
19. Both front wheel and tires.
20. Lower car.
21. Transaxle mount.
22. Upper transaxle to engine bolts and mount bracket.
23. Transaxle mount thru bolt.
24. Nut securing wiring harness.
25. Remove engine support fixture.
26. Fill tube and support bolt.
- Fluid level indicator.
27. Neutral start and T.C.C. connectors.
28. Shift cable.
29. Vent hose.
30. T.V. cable at transaxle and throttle lever.
31. LH exhaust manifold bolts.
- Exhaust crossover bolts.

32. Air cleaner, mounting bracket, MAF sensor and air tube as an assembly.
33. Battery.
34. Transaxle fluid.

Inspect

^ T.V. cable.
^ Proper oil level.
^ Oil leaks.
