Some early built 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier (1JC37) models may have the rear quarter window belt molding disengage from the plastic mounting clips. This may be due to the welded stud on the body being too short, causing the plastic mounting clip to bow preventing the clip to retain the molding properly.
If this condition occurs, remove the disengaged molding leaving the clips on the body. Using clear 3M Super Silicone Sealant/Adhesive #08661 or equivalent, apply adhesive inside molding at all clip and stud locations as shown in the illustration. Reinstall molding on existing clips and stud and secure with suitable tape until adhesive is cured. Remove tape from molding and check for molding retention.
A new, stronger clip which is less sensitive to weld stud height is being developed and will be available for service in the near future.
