Speedometer Module: Description and Operation

Electronic Instrument Cluster:

Vehicle Speed Sensor Location:

Speed Sensor Location:

The speedometer is a 36 segment bar graph display and a 2-1/2 digit numerical display.
The vehicle speed sensor (mounted in the transaxle) sends a speed signal to the Engine Control Module, which then sends a signal to the speedometer in the form of pulses. 4000 pulses equal 1 mile. The speed signal input is processed by the microprocessor and is then used to operate the digital speed and odometers display.

The odometer display is a multifunction display which includes both total odometer and trip odometer indicators. Both are switch selectable and utilize the same display. The total odometer uses a non-volatile memory device to record accumulated vehicle milage to at least 299,999 miles. The word "ODOMETER" is displayed with the total odometer. The trip odometer will display up to 9999.9 miles. The miles traveled is stored even with the ignition switch "OFF". The word "TRIP" is displayed with the trip odometer and either "miles" or "Km".

The information stored in the total odometer is retained in a removable "non-volatile memory" which MUST stay with the car.
