Engine: Service and Repair


1987-88 CORVETTE

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables at engine, then remove plenum extension.
3. Disconnect plug wires at distributor cap, then remove distributor cap and distributor.
4. Remove cowl screen, then the wiper motor arm attaching nut.
5. Disconnect wiper motor electrical connectors, then remove wiper motor cover and motor.
6. Remove air intake duct with MAF sensor, then disconnect all necessary vacuum hoses and electrical connectors at engine.
7. Disconnect injection harness at intake.
8. Drain engine oil and cooling system, then disconnect heater and radiator hoses.
9. Remove serpentine belt.
10. Relieve fuel pressure, then disconnect fuel lines at fuel rail.
11. Disconnect AIR switching valve at A/C compressor, then the catalytic converter AIR pipe.
12. Disconnect A/C brace at exhaust manifold, then remove A/C bracket attaching nuts at water pump.
13. Loosen upper bracket attaching bolts, then the lower A/C mount bolt.
14. Disconnect accumulator at fan shroud and brace, then the fuel lines at block.
15. Remove fuel lines from A/C bracket and position compressor aside.
16. Remove alternator, then the AIR pump with bracket.
17. Disconnect power steering reservoir at fan shroud and brace.
18. Disconnect power steering pump and position aside.
19. Remove water pump and crankshaft pulley, then raise and support vehicle.
20. Disconnect ground wires at block.
21. Disconnect catalytic converter AIR pipe at manifold, then the transmission cooler lines at flywheel cover.
22. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors, then remove starter motor from engine.
23. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold, then remove oil filter and oil cooler adapter.
24. Remove flywheel cover, then the oil cooler line at oil pan.
25. Disconnect exhaust at converter hanger.
26. Remove engine mount through bolts, then the engine mount to block attaching bolts.
27. Remove bellhousing attaching bolts, then lower vehicle.
28. Support transmission using a suitable jack, then lift engine out of vehicle.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
