Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove turbocharger, if applicable.
3. Drain cooling system, then remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect flex hose from exhaust manifold.
5. Disconnect electrical connector from oxygen sensor.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe bracket from block, then the exhaust pipe from manifold.
7. Disconnect spark plug wires from plugs.
8. Disconnect thermostat housing and distributor from cylinder head.
9. Disconnect vacuum advance hoses, then the fuel lines from fuel pump.
10. Disconnect ground cable from intake manifold.
11. Disconnect necessary hoses and the throttle valve cable.
12. Disconnect vacuum switching valve electrical connector.
13. Disconnect heater hoses from intake manifold.
14. Remove power steering pump drive belt, if equipped.
15. Support engine using a suitable jack.
16. Remove right side engine mount and bracket from front cover.
17. Remove A/C compressor drive belt, if equipped.
18. Remove alternator drive belt, then align timing marks and remove front cover.
19. Loosen tension pulley, then remove timing belt.
20. Remove alternator bracket bolt from intake manifold.
21. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump through bolt from pump bracket, then the pump mounting bracket from block.
22. On all except turbocharged models, disconnect fuel line from fuel pump, then remove the pump.
23. On turbocharged models, depressurize fuel system, then disconnect fuel lines from fuel rail.
24. On all models, disconnect coolant hoses from intake manifold.

25. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 6.
26. Remove cylinder head.

27. Reverse procedure to install. Torque head attaching bolts in 2 steps,first to 29 ft lbs. then to 58m ft lbs. in sequence, Fig. 7.
