Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold and plenum assembly as described under INTAKE MANIFOLD.
3. Remove exhaust manifold as described under EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
4. Disconnect wiring harness at cylinder head.
5. Remove spark plug wires and the spark plugs.
6. Remove rocker arm covers, rocker arm nuts, rocker arm balls, rocker arms and pushrods.
7. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.

INSTALLATION
Gasket surfaces on cylinder head and case must be clean and free of nicks or heavy scratches. Cylinder bolt threads in case and threads on cylinder head bolts must be clean to obtain true torque.
1. Place gasket in position over dowel pins with note ``This Side Up'' showing and install cylinder head.
2. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with suitable sealant and install bolts.
3. Torque bolts in proper sequence, Fig. 3.
4. Install pushrods and loosely retain with rocker arms, ensuring lower ends of pushrods are in lifter seats.
5. Install spark plugs and wires.
6. Install intake and exhaust manifolds, then adjust valves as necessary.
