CODE 51

PROM ERROR
(FAULTY OR INCORRECT PROM)


Circuit Description:

Code 51 sets if any one of the following occur:

Faulty PROM unit

PROM unit improperly installed (may not set a code if installed backwards)

Some PROM pins not making contact (i.e. bent)

Always check to see that the PROM pins are not bent and are inserted properly into the ECM. whenever replacing PROM make certain the PROM is installed in the same direction as it was removed.


FUNCTIONAL TEST

Turn ignition on and enter self diagnostics. Allow code 12 to flash at least 4 times. This indicates no other codes are stored and PROM is properly installed. If code 51 flashes or the check engine light is on steady and codes are stored the PROM is not fully seated, is faulty, has bent or damaged pins or may be installed backwards. If installed backwards replace the PROM as turning the ignition on instantly destroys it.
