Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
3. Drain engine coolant, ,then remove TBI cover.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
5. Disconnect heater hose, accelerator and T.V. cable bracket from intake manifold.
6. Lower vehicle, then remove remaining vacuum hoses from the intake.
7. Disconnect accelerator linkage at the TBI any necessary wires.
8. Disconnect upper radiator hose at thermostat, then remove serpentine belt.
9. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
10. Disconnect fuel feed and return lines, Fig. 5.
11. Remove alternator with wires and position aside, then remove alternator rear brace.
12. Remove rocker arm cover, then rocker arms and pushrods. Keep valve train components in order. They should be installed in the same locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed.
13. Remove cylinder head bolts, then remove the cylinder head with manifolds and TBI unit.
14. Reverse procedure to install, torque cylinder head retaining bolts to specifications:


A. Torque all bolts initially to 55 N.m (41 lb. ft.)
B. Tighten all bolts an additional angle in 3 steps to acheive a total rotation of:
^ Short bolts [1] 100°
^ Long bolts [2] 110°

Step 1 : All bolts additional 45°
Step 2 : All bolts additional 45°
Step 3 :
^ Long bolts [1] additional 20°
^ Short bolts [2] additional 10°


[1] Long bolts (exhaust side) include: 8, 4, 1, 5 & 9.
[2] Short bolts (intake side) include: 7, 3, 2, 6 & 10.
