Instrument Cluster Replacement

Fig. 6 Instrument Cluster. 1989-90 Cavalier:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove six screws attaching instrument panel trim plate to instrument panel.
3. Pull top of trim plate outward and remove trim plate from instrument panel.
4. Remove four screws securing instrument cluster to instrument panel, Fig. 6.
5. Remove screws attaching steering column cover to instrument panel, then the lower column cover.
6. Remove two steering column retaining bolts and lower steering column to floor.
7. Pull instrument cluster out slightly and disconnect speedometer cable.
8. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, disconnect vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connector from rear of cluster.
9. On all models, remove cluster and disconnect instrument panel harness connector from printed circuit located at rear of cluster.
10. Reverse procedure to install. Torque instrument cluster attaching bolt to 12 inch lbs.
